My daughter is playing Maggie in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. May I videotape this?
This may seem harmless enough, but the answer to this question is very likely to be no. Dramatists Play Service, however, does not control this set of rights. We only handle English-language stage performance rights to the plays that we publish. Questions about videotaping a performance should be directed to the author's agent. The name and address of the agent can generally be found on the copyright page of all of our acting editions. See the paragraph that begins: "All other inquiries..." One thing to keep in mind, however, is that video rights are usually purchased by film studios as part of the set of rights they acquire when they purchase the rights to make a film from a play. So if the play in question has been turned into a film the author's agent may need to send you to a particular film studio to get permission to tape a performance of a play.
