THE STORY: Set in Europe in the thirteenth century, the play tells of the unsuccessful attempt by thousands of German and French children, led by the thirteen-year-old Nicholas, to recapture the Holy Land after their elders had failed in the task. Through sixteen short scenes, with chants and songs to punctuate the action, we see the children move from initial idealism and high hopes to eventual disillusionment and ruin, as they come into conflict with the harsh political and economic realities of a corrupt world. And yet, in the end, it the message of hope and idealism which prevails, for the ultimate lesson of the play is that the world can and will be changed for the better when there are those willing to face its challenges, whatever the cost.
This remarkable play draws a parable for all time through its vivid retelling of a legendary historical event. “…astonishing and moving…set off by good comic details.” —London Times.
