THE STORY: The mother of freshman and rising athletic star Michael Newsome has stopped into his guidance counselor’s office for a meeting. While everyone is impressed with his record-breaking times in the pool, his mother is concerned that his poor performance in Ms. Dawkins class may be because the accommodations put into place to help with Michael’s learning disabilities are not being utilized. When Ms. Dawkins joins the meeting, the ramifications of generational shifts in America’s expectations for education, parenting, and teaching rear their heads to life-altering results.
